John Wheaton Lynch (1839-1907) was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He worked as a salesman until the onset of the Civil War, when he helped recruit for the 106th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers. The regiment was mustered in on August 24, 1861, and Lynch served as a first lieutenant. On January 9, 1863, he was promoted to captain, and on September 7, 1863, he was discharged for disability.
